If you love the feeling of being pressed back in your seat by the jet thrust as a plane takes off, the new BMW M5 is for you. Even if you’ve experienced the sheer performance and extraordinary excitement of previous generation M5, the new car will cause you to reassess everything you thought you knew about power.
First there’s the Competition Package, which now comes as standard. It adds 11kW to the already tremendous output of the stunning 4.4 litre BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine, boosting it to an incredible 423kW. The torque curve, is also broader giving the car more flexibility throughout the rev range, delivering lightning fast overtaking and immense tractability on twisting roads. With 680Nm staggering acceleration of 0 to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds is never more than the merest flex of the right ankle away. However true to BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy the exponential leap in performance thrills have not come at the cost of diminished fuel economy. You can be proud that your new BMW M5 still returns a very impressive EU fuel consumption figure of just 9.9 litres/100 km via the seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission.
Handling has been improved too. The uprated Active M Differential driving the rear axle delivers improved traction out of tight and bumpy corners.
Styling changes to the striking BMW F10 bodyshell are subtle. There’s a new grille featuring an M5 badge and double bladed slats mirroring the double-spoke design of the new 20” alloy wheels. Adaptive LED Headlights are standard, and the new taillights feature striking LED light strips for a high contrast, high visibility note to the muscular rear of the car. Inside there is a new double spoke M leather steering wheel, and the touch-sensitive control display iDrive system now features elegant chrome trim.
