No other car has inspired the imagination of performance car enthusiasts the world over like the BMW M3. No other model offers super-car levels of performance and handling that you can enjoy every day. On the track the new M3 and M4 shave several tenths from the time it takes to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h, now just 4.5 seconds. They also lap the Nurburgring comfortably under eight minutes – incredible numbers from cars that are as happy on the daily commute as they are on the Nordschlieffe.
The all-new M3 and M4 are both based on the brilliant BMW F30 3 Series platform. The difference this time is the all-new designation of the coupe is now ‘M4’ to bring it into line with the 2, 6 and i8 series BMW’s, all of which are coupé variants.
Of course you can see the styling differences between the two cars for yourself in the accompanying photographs, so now let’s take a look at the detail beneath their svelte contours.
Perhaps the major enhancement to the new models is an all-new light-weight BMW twin-turbo charged six-cylinder engine. Despite sharing the same three litre capacity as the BMW 135i and 335i, this engine is unique to the M3 and M4 and produces 317kW of power and an incredible 550Nm of torque – and it’s available over a 4000 rpm range for dramatically enhanced flexibility, especially at low revs.
BMW M division engineers have also found a significant 80kg weight saving through the extensive use of carbon-fibre body panels and driveshaft. Other exciting new technology standard on the new BMW M3 and M4 includes switchable modes for damping, engine map, gearshift and steering. Gearbox options are BMW’s fabulously tactile six speed manual and the latest version of BMW’s ultra-fast shifting seven speed DCT double clutch transmission.
