After ten thrilling races, BMW defended the DTM Manufacturers’ title it won last year. With five outright wins, four pole positions and four fastest laps, BMW cars were the ones to beat all season. In the teams’ competition, BMW Team RBM came out second with 148 points. Augusto Farfus from Brazil was the best-placed BMW representative in the Drivers’ Championship, finishing runner-up with 116 points. Marco Wittmann (DE) of BMW Team MTEK ended the season as the most successful DTM rookie. Altogether the eight BMW drivers scored a massive 369 points, which was 22 ahead of Audi and 103 clear of Mercedes-Benz.
BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt said, “It means an awful lot to us to have defended our title in the Manufacturers’ Championship. After winning in 2012, it is fantastic to have come out on top again, thanks to a strong team performance across the board. This title is a perfect reward for all the hard work that BMW Motorsport and our teams put in over the course of the year.”
BMW enjoyed its most successful weekend of the season at the Red Bull Ring race in Spielberg. Five BMW M3 DTMs finished in the top ten, together scoring 70 points towards the Manufacturers’ Championship – more than any other manufacturer scored on one single weekend in 2013.
This season also marked the fiftieth DTM race victory by a BMW M3 with Farfus’ win at Zandvoort, making it the most successful DTM car of all time.
In 2014 BMW will be back on the DTM starting grid in the all-new M4, determined to make it three in a row for the Manufacturer’s title and with Bruno Spengler out to reclaim the Drivers’ Championship he claimed in 2012 the first year of BMW’s remarkable return to the DTM after its 20 year absence from the grid.
