As a New Zealand double-international and sports commentator, Jeff Wilson needs little introduction. We catch up with him on the coming cricket season, his summer plans, and find out a bit about his BMW X5.
BMW: It’s shaping up to be a big summer of cricket. Which matches are you looking forward to the most?
JW: I can’t wait for South Africa to tour New Zealand next year. They’re a quality side that play great cricket and they’d be a fantastic scalp for the Black Caps to claim.
BMW: What are your favourite cricketing grounds?
JW: In New Zealand, the traditional grounds like the Basin Reserve in Wellington or Seddon Park in Hamilton are my favourites. Overseas, it has to be Lords. You can never go past the home of cricket.
BMW: When you get away from the commentary box, where do you like to take your X5?
JW: I take it everywhere! But Mangawhai Heads, up north, is the perfect drive. It keeps finding its way to the nearest golf course too. Not that I’m complaining.
BMW: What are you looking forward to most this summer?
JW: Everything that’s great about a kiwi summer, the barbecues, the beach and, of course, a cold beverage.
BMW: On those long summer afternoons, what are your backyard cricket rules?
JW: You’ve got to keep it simple. Always six and out, all outside edges into the slip cordon (garden) and one hand one bounce if it’s one on one.
BMW: Where are we likely to find you this summer?
JW: We’ll be off on a few different journeys. Mangawhai Heads, Hawera, Queenstown. All very different destinations, but that’s the great thing about New Zealand.
BMW: So, when you do get away in your X5, what sporting equipment do you take with you?
JW: The list is extensive: the cricket bat and ball; tennis rackets; soccer ball; rugby ball; bikes; boogie boards; paddle board. And that’s just for starters.
BMW: What else do you do over summer to stay fit?
JW: A simple philosophy. Short, intense workouts, like interval training or circuits. Most of the time though I’m just trying to keep up with my two tearaway boys.
BMW: What do you enjoy most about your X5?
JW: If it’s an easy drive the car cruises beautifully, if it’s a more challenging road the X5 handles it with ease. And it has every comfort and convenience you need to love the drive.
BMW: And what’s on the playlist while you’re driving?
JW: It’s always light, easy going and in the background. Unless the kids are in the car, then it’s whatever they want to listen to!
